Navigating Professionalism Challenges: An Interactive Case Study Experience

This interactive session works through a series of complex professionalism scenarios using audience polling and role play by the panel. Participants will examine how the Code of Professional Conduct applies in practice, along with relevant Actuarial Standards of Practice (ASOPs), Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) guidance, and other professional standards as appropriate.
For each scenario, the panel will set out the background, identify the professional and ethical considerations, and invite participants to weigh in on possible courses of action through polling. Panelists will then discuss the implications of the different responses, highlighting key professionalism principles and the reasoning behind each approach. Because professionalism issues often turn on nuance and judgment, the discussion will focus on understanding the range of reasonable outcomes rather than seeking a single "correct" answer.

Beyond the Actuarial Team: Communicating, Collaborating, and Relying on Others

In this CCA professionalism webinar, presenters will explore how actuaries can responsibly rely on the work of others in an increasingly cross-disciplinary environment. In addition to discussing what types of work may be relied upon and the relevant actuarial standards of practice, this session will focus on the practical behaviors, conversations, and collaborative processes that help an actuary develop an appropriate basis for reliance.
Presenters will use practical examples and cautionary scenarios to discuss how communication and collaboration can strengthen professional judgment, improve the quality of actuarial work, support transparent communication with intended users, and build relationships with other professions.
Examples of reliance may include work from other actuaries, data scientists, investment professionals, technology teams, vendors, and other subject-matter experts. Presenters will also discuss reliance on data from public, proprietary, internal, and third-party sources, as well as considerations associated with emerging tools such as generative AI.
