Margaret is an FCAS, FSA, MAAA, FCA, CPCU, ARM, ERMP, CERA and is the President, of Tiller Consulting Group, Inc., which she co-founded in 1984. Margaret meets the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ requirements of a Qualified Actuary for Issuing Statements of Actuarial Opinion for Property and Casualty Annual Statements in the United Statements and the American Academy of Actuaries’ Qualification Standards for issuing Statements of Actuarial Opinion in the United States.
Margaret’s education includes a MS in Statistics from Stanford University and both a BA and MA of Arts in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University. She has over 40 years of actuarial and risk management consulting experience. She frequently speaks at professional and trade meetings.
Margaret started her actuarial career at Booz-Allen Consulting Actuaries. She then worked at Tillinghast, Nelson & Warren, Inc., rising to Assistant Vice President, before joining Warren, McVeigh & Griffin, Inc., a risk management consulting firm, as Principal Consulting Actuary and Manager of the Actuarial Department. In 1984 she co-founded Tiller Consulting Group, Inc. Margaret’s clients include individual entities retaining risks, workers’ compensation and other risk sharing pools, and insurance companies, as well as insurance departments and law firms. She has clients in both the private and public sectors.
Margaret served on the PRIMA Pooling Accounting Task Force that issued the PRIMA "Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Guidelines for Intergovernmental Pools." She also served on several Governmental Accounting Standards Board Task Forces including the one for GASB Statement 10, “Accounting and Financial Reporting for Risk Financing and Related Insurance Issues,” as well as on the Public Risk Database Project Products and Applications Committee. The Public Risk Database Project was the precursor to the Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI).
Margaret has written many articles and is the lead co-author of the RM56 textbook, Essentials of Risk Financing, first edition, and the author of the "Individual Risk Rating" and “Risk Theory” chapters in the Casualty Actuarial Society’s Foundations of Casualty Actuarial Science textbook. Margaret also is the author of CAS Exam 8 and 9 Study Manuals published by ACTEX Publications. Several of Margaret’s publications have been on the Casualty Actuarial Society’s examination syllabus. Margaret has written the chapter on Non-Life Perils and Coverages for the IAA Risk Book due out in 2023 and is writing the chapter on Life Perils and Coverages.
Margaret is a Past President of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and the Past Chair of the International Association of Consulting Actuaries (IACA). She has been on the Board of the American Academy of Actuaries and was a member of the predecessor to the North American Actuarial Council. She was the first President of the Central States Actuarial Forum. She has served on several Actuarial Standard Board task forces, served on its Casualty and General Committees, and Chaired the General Committee. She current chairs the Task Force revising Actuarial Standards of Practice Number 36, “Statements of Actuarial Opinion Regarding Property/Casualty Loss and Loss Expense Reserves.” She also has volunteered extensively for the American Academy of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries (CCA). Margaret currently serves on the International Actuarial Association’s Actuarial Standards Committee, is the IAA’s Delegate to IACA, represents the CCA on the IAA’s General Insurance Forum, and is the CCA’s Liaison to the IAA’s Climate Risk Task Force. She is on the Task Force for International Standard of Actuarial Practice 7.
Margaret was featured in an article that appeared in The Journal of Commerce series about people who make a difference. She was the only actuary to be profiled.
