Currently retired, but immediately prior was Mercer's Health Retiree Medical Leader. Preceeding that: Rich is Mercer Health and Benefits’ East Market Financial Leader, responsible for the overall delivery of actuarial services to clients from New England to Florida. The role focuses internally on training and development of actuarial staff, and externally to ensure the effective deployment of actuarial tools, resources and personnel to both clients and prospects. In this role, Rich also supports the H&B Chief Actuary and many related national initiatives.
Rich is also a Senior Consulting Actuary who manages financial projects for large and jumbo clients. From 2009 to 2015 Rich was the chair of Mercer’s national Actuarial and Financial Group (AFG) workgroup on Health Reform modeling. In this capacity he led Mercer's efforts in developing and distributing the necessary models and tools to help clients navigate Health Reform and understand its likely impacts.
He is a recognized expert in the areas of employer plan pricing, reserving and budgeting, as well as retiree medical design and valuation.
Since 2000, Rich has been involved in every aspect of the business’ operations including tenure as Richmond H&B’s Office Business Leader, and in 2016 led the growth of the Richmond office’s actuarial team before taking on the market role.
Rich has been in the benefits business since 1990. Prior to joining Mercer in 1995, Rich spent five years with Travelers/MetraHealth in Hartford, CT, with responsibilities including group pension bidding and reserving, and group health insurance pricing. He was the small group pricing actuary for Travelers’ West Unit.
Rich has been a speaker at various professional functions, including the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, the Mid-Atlantic Actuarial Club and Mercer’s annual Health Care Seminar.
Rich holds a BA in Actuarial Science from the University of Connecticut. He is a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries (FCA), a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
Rich is currently serving his second three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and serves on its Executive Committee as Secretary.
