Prescription medications continue to make headlines year after year as new and more expensive medications are released and there is an increased pressure to shift utilization to the lowest net cost. In a variety of settings, actuaries are constantly facing pricing issues related to the utilization, costs and coverage of prescription medications. The presenters examine 2014 pharmacy trends based on published reports from major Pharmacy Benefit Managers, as well as trends in carrier formularies in the Medicare Part D program and the commercial space. The presenters also discuss the impact of the specialty medication pipeline and how new specialty medications, including those used in the treatment of Hepatitis C and Oncology, are changing the prescription medication landscape.
